Information on Establishment of Residential Permit Parking Zones in Alcova Heights

Establishment of Residential Permit Parking Zones

Establishing “zoned” parking on a street in Arlington County is governed by  a local ordinance. The County requires that 60 percent of the residents request the program and there must be a “measurable indication of overspill from outside the zone”. Block residents must request permit parking through a petition that includes signatures from at least 60 percent of the affected addresses (one signature per address). Petitions are available at http://www.parkarlington.com or by calling 703-228-3344. The AHCA currently takes no position on the establishment of zoned parking on any street in Alcova Heights. More information available here and here.

Information on the Proposed Streetcar

As many of you know there is a plan under consideration for a streetcar along Columbia Pike. That plan is currently being discussed in the community with great fervor. Cost effectiveness, funding, feasibility and implementation plans are among the aspects being debated.   With any municipal plan, especially transportation, there are pros and cons to consider. Our civic association wants you to be informed so you can determine if and how you want to be involved, and whether you want to express your opinion to the County. The Alcova Heights board is not going to take a position for or against a streetcar, but we encourage our residents to become educated and active.  There is a lot of good information from a number of sources, both on the web and in public meetings that are currently scheduled.

Meetings:
–Arlington County will host a Town Hall providing an update on the streetcar plans and background information —Wednesday, March 27 at 6:45 pm at Kenmore Middle School. The county has scheduled five additional Neighborhood Town Halls and two Neighborhood Town Walks as well.

–The Arlington Committee of 100 will host a forum in which both sides of the streetcar issues have been invited to present their positions on Wednesday, April 10, at 8:00 pm at Marymount University, in Gerard Phelan Hall. See http://arlingtoncommitteeof100.org/meetings.php.  Additional information can be found in a Sun Gazette article at http://www.sungazette.net/arlington/news/april-committee-of-forum-to-feature-each-side-in-streetcar/article_37673b22-8595-11e2-a7da-001a4bcf887a.html.

Night Roadwork on Columbia Pike (Veitch to Walter Reed): March 25-28

Television inspections of the sanitary sewer along Columbia Pike from S Veitch St to Walter Reed Dr indicate that the sewer must be rehabilitated. The technology used will prevent the need for extensive and disruptive excavations.

The county has contracted AM Liner East Inc. to perform the cleaning and lining work that is scheduled for Monday, March 25, 2013 to Thursday, March 28, 2013. The work will be performed each night from 8:00pm until 5:00am. In the event that work is cancelled due to equipment malfunctions and/or inclement weather, you will be notified at a later date once the work is rescheduled.

The resin used in the Cured-In-Place-Pipe (CIPP) contains Styrene, a chemical with an unpleasant odor that is detectable at very low concentration levels but not harmful to humans or pets.  This odor may enter homes through dry drain traps.  To sufficiently reduce the possibility of this odor entering homes, it is advice to pour some water into all drains, including basement floor and air conditioner condensation drains prior to the start of our work.  This is also a good practice in the future to prevent unwanted gases from the sanitary sewer system from entering dwellings.

For more information regarding the resin used in this process, please contact:

Update on the 8th Street sidewalk project

From Sena Wijesinha, Capital Projects Coordinator:

The 8th Street S project is nearing completion, as the utility companies are currently working on the pole relocations and the line transfers.
Jill Yutan, Landscape Architect for the Neighborhood Conservation Program, will be installing 24 Redbud trees under the power lines on the north side of 8th Street S. and 7 Blackgum on the south side of the street. She has mailed out plans to all property owners and has received comments from a few folks.
The bioretention basin/sidewalk easterly corner of the project at corner of S. 8th and Monroe work will also be completed in the Spring, followed-by street paving work and reconstruction of the existing two speed humps (one will be relocated closer to S Oakland St), signage installation and striping work later in the spring/early summer.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Sena directly at (703) 228-7933
