Social Media Code of Conduct

Alcova Heights Citizens Association (Proposed) Social Media Code of Conduct (2024): 

The purpose of this social media code describes expected behavior to provide for informative, positive, and neighborly exchange among ose residents. Recurrent violations may result in removal from the Alcova Heights Citizens Association Facebook page.

1. Be respectful: Treat all members with respect, regardless of differences in opinions, beliefs, or backgrounds. Courtesy is required. No personal attacks.

2. No hate speech or discrimination: Any form of hate speech, discrimination, or derogatory language towards individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, etc., will not be tolerated.

3. Stay on topic: Keep discussions relevant to the purpose and theme of the group (i.e. the ose neighborhood & surrounding area). Off-topic posts may be removed to maintain the group’s focus. The purpose of the listserv is neighbor to neighbor and community interests communications.

4. No spam, advertising or self-promotion: Avoid excessive self-promotion or spamming of unrelated content. No commercial advertising allowed. (Local fundraisers such as Alcova Heights-related PTA events are allowed.) Promotional posts should be relevant to the group’s interests and limited to designated threads. No political endorsements are allowed – there are many other news sources and forums for those debates.


The following are allowed: youth organizations (Girl Scouts, Scouting America, etc) and nonprofit community service groups based in Alcova Heights. Alcova Heights Residents may give away or sell personal effects. Residents may announce the sale or rental listing of their own properties IN Alcova Heights. Professional Realtors should not use the listserv for that purpose. Anyone else needs to ask the moderator for permission ahead of time (alcova.heights@gmail dot com). We’d like to keep ads to a minimum. (We’ll evaluate on a case-by-case basis.)

Network Marketing, Multi-level Marketing (MLM) and similar sales or associated events and activity are strictly prohibited on the listserv, Facebook Group, and the Newsletter.

5. Politics. No politics above the county-level or local interest. No national politics; DMV acceptable.

6. Be mindful of language and tone: Use polite and constructive language in all communications. Avoid offensive language, personal attacks, or inflammatory remarks.

7. Respect privacy: Do not share personal information about other members without their consent. This includes information that could be easily traceable to people’s home address or other PII. Respect the privacy of all group members. (No doxxing.)

8. No trolling or harassment: Do not engage in trolling, bullying, or harassment of any kind. Report any instances of harassment to the group admins for appropriate action. 

9. Fact-check before posting: Verify the accuracy of information before sharing it with the group. Misinformation or fake news can harm the credibility of the group.

10. Follow platform rules: Adhere to the terms of service and community guidelines of Facebook. Any content that violates these rules may be removed. We have freedom of speech, not freedom of platform. You are welcome to take discussions to other platforms as needed.

11. Listen and be open-minded: Listen to different perspectives and be open to constructive criticism. Engage in discussions with an open mind and willingness to learn from others.

12. Please remember not to reveal personally identifiable information about other members of the listserv without their prior consent. This includes, but is not limited to:
– Names associated with their home address
– Phone numbers
– Emails
– Employers
– Family members’ names

Please use your better judgement and consideration of others.

13. Violations of these rules may result in a warning or immediate removal without warning.
